Puppymill Awareness Working Solutions is a volunteer, non-profit group in Ottawa, Ontario, dedicated to raising public awareness and educating the public at large regarding the cruelty and abuse associated with puppy mills and irresponsible breeding practices, including selling puppies from anonymous sources via the internet, newspaper advertising, and in pet stores.
Through education and awareness, we empower individuals with the knowledge required to make responsible and ethical choices when choosing a puppy/dog.
PAWS strongly opposes the selling of puppies in pet stores.
For many years, pet stores have served as the primary distribution channel for substandard breeders to sell puppies. Following a two year campaign with the City of Ottawa, Team PAWS, together with a broad coalition of partners and supporters, successfully legislated against the selling of cats and dogs in Ottawa pet stores.
A new bylaw, banning the sale of puppies and kittens in Ottawa pet stores will come into effect in May 2021, adding to many other Ontario cities, including:
Toronto, Kingston, Mississauga, Vaughan, Waterloo, Oakville, Cambridge, Richmond Hill, Orangeville.
PAWS fully supports and promotes the adoption and/or fostering of homeless animals via reputable non-profit rescue groups, as well as reputable and ethical breeder sources.
